World news (also international news or foreign coverage) is the jargon used by media outlets to describe any information about a country or subject that originates outside of a newspaper’s own national borders. Historically, this field was largely defined by what happened in Europe, where newspapers like the courants of the 17th century registered news from other countries and regions, but modern innovations in telecommunications have allowed journalists to report on global subjects from many places.
In the modern context, most of the world’s major news agencies prepare hard news stories and other material that can be sold to multiple newspapers or other broadcasters, sometimes referred to as a wire service or newswire. Some journalists working abroad without permanent employment contracts are called stringers, and may produce for several different companies at the same time.
